BLANKA KUDEJ
Blanka Kudej, the second-term Vice President
(Finance), was born and educated in Czechoslovakia, where she received her doctorate
(JUDr) from Charles University School of Law and practiced law in Prague for
several years. After her arrival in the United States in 1967, she went to Columbia
University in New York, and earned her Master's degree in library sciences (MSL).
After graduation, she took charge of the
international and foreign law collections at the Columbia University School of Law
Library. In 1981 she became associate law librarian for special collection and later
co-director of the Law Library. She also taught legal research at the Law School.For many
years, she has been consultant to the New York Joint International Law Program of New York
Law School, Brooklyn Law School and City University of New York Law School.
She delivered a large number of lectures on
various legal subjects at professional conferences and workshops and published several
legal bibliographies, e.g., Selective Bibliography on Women's Right and Political
Participation in Europe. Multilingual (1983); The New Law of the Sea (1984); a regular
column on "International Taxation," published monthly in Taxes International
(1982-1900.); "Czechoslovakia; Basic Legislation and Selective Bibliography of Recent
Publications (1992). Her bibliography, International Trade Law, published by Oceana
Publishers in 1983, won an award of the American Association of Law Libraries.. In 1993,
she was a recipient of a Distinguished Service Award of the American Association of
Law Libraries.
In 1996, she traveled to Prague on assignment
sponsored by the American Bar Association, Central and East European Initiative, to
evaluate the possibilities for establishing the International Legal Center there. She is
also one of the founders of "Women in International Law," associated with the
American Society of International Law.
She has been an active members of SVU for
many years. Our members will remember her from the time when she was the treasurer for the
Prague and Brno SVU world congresses. Since then she has been a member of SVU Executive
Board and in the year 1995-1998 she served in the capacity of Secretary-General of SVU.
Currently she serves again as Treasurer for the forthcoming SVU World Congress in
Washington, DC. She lives in Westchester, NY, with her husband Svata , who is also an
active member of SVU.
